How long does it take for the application to be approved?
The process can take anywhere from several weeks to a few months. After the application is submitted, there are usually appointments to determine the needs, the collection of medical statements, and sometimes classroom observations at the school. It is therefore highly advisable to submit the application as early as possible. It also often helps enormously to get support in advance from counseling centers or a future provider.
Can my child attend a mainstream school despite having a school companion?

Does the school companion do the teachers' jobs?
No, the school companion generally does not take on any pedagogical or didactic tasks of the teachers. They do not explain the teaching material and are in no way responsible for grading. Their role is purely assistive, to make learning easier for the child under the given conditions in the first place.
Can I choose the person who accompanies my child?
The final decision usually lies with the commissioned provider, as they select the appropriate personnel according to the specific diagnosis and the determined needs. However, personal introductory meetings almost always take place in advance to build a relationship of trust. If the "chemistry" between the child and the companion is absolutely not right in everyday life, a change can be sought in close consultation with the provider.
What is a disadvantage compensation in everyday school life?
Disadvantage compensation is an important measure that creates fair conditions for students with impairments to perform, without lowering the academic requirements. Typical practical examples include extra time for exams, modified exam formats, or the use of special technical aids.
Does the companion necessarily need a pedagogical education?
Not necessarily, as there are also many highly motivated and trained career changers in this professional field. Whether a pedagogical specialist, such as a state-recognized educator or special education teacher, is necessary depends primarily on the child's individual support needs. For particularly complex diagnoses or highly challenging behavior, the authorities often require specially qualified personnel. In many other cases, however, a well-trained assistant is completely sufficient.
Where do I submit the application for a school companion?
In the case of an impending or already existing mental disability (such as autism or ADHD), the youth welfare office is the right point of contact. If, on the other hand, it is an intellectual or physical disability, the application must be submitted to the local social welfare office as part of the integration assistance.
